A new chapter

I have been told by a certain someone for nearly 20 years (we met 19 years ago this fall) that exercise is good for you.

Hmmmm...interesting. Sounds like some sort of freaky thing. Especially coming from a P.E. major who also played college tennis. It was pretty hard to believe. After all, there isn't any scientific research to back this up or anything...

This certain someone has reminded me of this off and on over the years.

I do have one huge rule about exercise: I don't run in public. It really is a scary thing to me.

Wait. I will run in public. Only if it has to do with the safety of our children or another family member or friend.

Yeah...so I am quite cognizant of my lack of running skills.

I love to walk. But I knew I needed more than walking. (Although I do want to get walking more this summer!) Aerobics never appealed to me. I did enjoy water aerobics (this was shortly after we were first married), but who has time to get to a pool now?

I've thought about things off and on over the years. Weights have never been my thing. I haven't quite gotten to the point I could go to a fitness club (perhaps if I had a buddy system thing going...not sure about that).

Anyhoo, the past few months I have been pondering the purchase of a piece of exercise equipment.

After all, I'm not getting any younger. I'd like to lose a few pounds. Plus I've lost the genetic lottery when it comes to cardiac issues and my paternal side of the family. That is a pretty good wake up call in itself.

I was very interested in a treadmill for a while. Then several folks I knew really started talking about their ellipticals and how much they loved them.

After more research, I decided an elliptical is what would be best for me.

After discussion (and a bit of skepticism) with a certain someone (after all I don't have the best 'track' record in this area...badump bump! couldn't resist that one!) the order was made with Sears. It arrived on Friday. We picked it up and certain someone put it together over the weekend. Thank you!!!

I had my first workout tonight - 20 minutes. I wanted to do it when a certain someone was not home and teaching class. It really doesn't sound like much right now to go for 20 minutes. But for a person who has not done heart-accelerating exercise for years, it was a good workout. The machine has many options, including 8 pre-set workouts, workouts based on time and calories. I built up about mid-way in resistance, which was plenty for tonight!

I'm going to start with an every-other-day format. Hopefully I can build up in more intense workouts and even build up to 30 minutes.

Whoa.

How about just sticking to it...I can step it up a notch in time!

Anyway, if I put my goals on the blog, hopefully I'll be more accountable. :)

Here's to my new chapter!

Woohoo! Welcome to 38 1/2! If it makes you feel better, the metabolism is marching slower and slower every day at my house, too. Wish we lived closer to each other; I'd be your workout buddy! I've gotten to the point where, as long as I exercise daily, my neck and crooked back don't hurt. And Lord knows we need stress-relief from our little (and not-so-little) people too, right? Best wishes in your new chapter, Toot! Love ya!

You and me both Rhonda! I too have decided to turn over a new leaf and start getting some exercise. Supposedly it's good for mental health or something crazy like that. :-) I picked a running partner and plan to train over the next few months to run a race somewhere. The length of the race will depend on how fast the training goes. Actually, now that I am a few weeks into it. . . I LOVE IT (but at first I hated it)! I guess exercise is good after all!
