Stormy weather

We've had more than our share of rain lately.  We've had a number of thunder and lighting storms to go along with the rain.  On Sunday when Trav went out to the garden in the morning he commented that the grass was very squishy.

We haven't had to water much - we have new trees and perennials but they've been doing great.  We do have some hanging baskets that require a bit more water.

We were woken by the sound of hail a little over a week ago at about 1:45 a.m.  A storm hit all at once - thunder, lightning, rain and hail all within a few seconds.  Most hail storms are short-lived (at least the hail part).  This hail storm was very different.  The hail kept coming and coming.  In all, it hailed for nearly 10 minutes.  I can't recall every being in a hail storm that long.  The hail stones were about the size of nickels.  Some a bit bigger, some smaller.  The hail was so loud as it pounded on the south and west windows on our house.

It wasn't long and Grace was awake from the storm.  She was NOT impressed with the interruption to her beauty sleep.  After the storm passed, all four of us were in bed together plus two true scared-y cats (THIS is why we have a king-sized bed!).  Grace was flopping all over and couldn't get comfy so she went back to her bed.  Needless to say none of us had the best sleep that night.

Trav surveyed the damage and we were fortunate.  The downspouts have some dings in them, but other than that, the house is fine.  A few perennials were substantially damaged and one rhubarb plant was shredded.  Thankfully the tomatoes, potatoes and all other garden crops have bounced back.

The storm ramped up after our area and within a few miles of us was producing baseball sized hail.  We were very fortunate to have the little damage we did.

Hopefully we have a few days of sun and nice weather.  We could stand to have a few quiet days without any storms!
