We've had a good spring. Well, until recently it still felt like winter, even though the calendar had declared it was spring. I had told Carson I thought it was "spinter" and he agreed.
The Red River crested last night at 38.75 feet. This is down about 2 feet from two years ago, which is a big deal. Still, I think this is the fourth highest crest in recorded history. Nice. We love 500 year floods every year. The water will stay high for a while. Current projections don't anticipate it will fall below 35 feet this week. :-( I've posted pics - some of the early ones are from a week ago, while the majority are from yesterday and today. I have to remember to get pics of the Red River when it is 'normal' so I have good pics for comparison purposes. I think typical depth is 9 feet. Need to check on that though!
Other than the water restrictions in Moorhead and a few road detours, we haven't been very affected this year. We're very blessed with where we live, work and do most of our shopping, etc.
I'm shocked and impressed that all of this was accomplished without any cancelling of local schools. After a two-week shut-down two years ago, we were anticipating the worst from an academic standpoint. We have had quite a few of our military students activated at NDSU for the flood fight, but that is to be expected.
So, to catch up. We're happy to see warmer temps. Daddy and Grace did a bunch of yard work yesterday. They spread out leaves on the garden. They raked the yard (especially where the voles did a bunch of damage). They got out the lawn furniture. They worked the compost. Grace is an awesome little gardener and certainly Daddy's right hand in the garden.
The last month has been busy - I attended a conference for work in Seattle in the middle of March. Great conference and I presented twice, which was exciting. I also got to spend time with some of my extended family on the west coast, which was very special.
After I returned home, the Kitch family from the North arrived - Nana, Papa, Uncle Ian, Cousin Brody and Cousin Hannah. The kids had a wonderful time swimming at the hotel the first night. The next day Ian and Brody went to the Cities to watch UND play hockey. The rest of us went bowling, visited and played. On Sunday, Ian and Brody returned and they all got on the road to try to avoid an awful storm system. They got most of the way home, before being forced to stay in a hotel for the night. The kids keep talking about the fun they had with their cousins!
We also enjoyed a stop from our liver buddy, Kylee, and her family on Sunday morning. Kylee is 6 months post-transplant and has grown so much! It's clear that her new liver is working! So fun to see all of you and stop by anytime!
We had Family Fun Night at Carson's school in late March (carnival night). We always have so much fun at this well-planned event.
We enjoyed "State Fair Night" at Carson's school this past week. He'd been working hard for several months on gathering data about his state - Maine. He did such a great job pulling it all together and he did the majority of the work (and had all of the creative ideas for his presentation board). He also developed a presentation about Maine. He thinks Maine should be our summer vacation destination. Someday, but not this summer!
