We often tell Carson a story before bedtime. His favs are from when he was little - especially a baby. He often requests stories from his "orange, sick baby" days (i.e. pre-liver transplant).
Tonight we were relaying one such story. I explained that I was with him during one incident of his Hickman line exploding and that Daddy missed it since he was back at the Ronald McDonald House sleeping. Carson looked a bit puzzled.
I explained that I stayed with him during the day and slept at RMH at night and Daddy slept during the day and stayed with Carson each night.
Trav explained that we made a promise to him at the time of his first surgery (a Kasai procedure) when he was a little over 7 weeks old that we would never leave him alone. So during those months that he was so sick we switched back and forth, overlapping a bit each morning and evening for family time.
Carson smiled a soft smile.
He looked at both of us.
He said "Thanks!" and reached out his arms to encircle both Trav and I into one big hug. It was so incredible and touching to see his gratitude.
All I could think was...
No, Carson.
Thank you.
Thank you for making it, buddy!
