A post about a smart girl needs to be followed with one about a smart boy. As we practiced his spelling words a few minutes ago, I thought about how amazing this is. We're so proud of Carson.
Carson is a great speller. We're not just saying that...he really is. We think due to his hearing loss, he sees words differently. He identifies words as the 'chunks' that they are - how we as adults read. He hasn't been able to rely upon phonics to learn to identify sounds and words - he's learned to remember the word as a 'chunk'. It has served him very well.
Anyway, tomorrow is Week 5's spelling test at school. They have 10 words to learn and are to practice 1-2 challenge words each week. Every week now Carson has known all of the 10 words correctly as well as all 5 challenge words (words such as reflector, bicycle, principal, custodian, secretary, etc.). It's likely tomorrow's group will be no exception.
We are so proud of you Carson - you were up against so much in your first year of life. We didn't know what the future would hold for you. You beat the odds and are doing wonderfully. You are an awesome big brother. Keep on making the world better and brighter!
