Traditions

I've been thinking a lot about traditions lately. Nana Jane and I were visiting recently about traditions too. Traditions tend to make their way into the holidays more than any other time, but I'm a big believer in traditions year-round.

Anyway, thought I'd share some of our traditions around the holidays!
  • We typically decorate the Saturday after Thanksgiving (except this year - still recovering from Florida!)
  • We buy the new Ronald McDonald House and Make-A-Wish ornament every year (RMH ornaments are from the Twin Cities house, MAW are from Things Remembered - they are beautiful!)
  • Carson and Grace get new ornaments every year to be added to the tree
  • I love to bake - lefse, sandbakkels, & krumkake are my favorites; also love to do butter cookies, candy cane cookies and a chex mix of some sort. I'll bake just about anything that looks yummy and fun!
  • We go to our church's Christmas pageant on Christmas Eve
  • We come home and eat a bunch of appetizers - fun, simple and filling!
  • We always read the Christmas story from the Bible
  • We open presents on Christmas Eve
  • Santa arrives in time for Christmas morning, with a few gifts from Santa in stockings.
  • Santa brings new pajamas (always fleecy ones from Old Navy) every year for everyone in our house
  • Santa is a planner - tags are removed and he's already washed the pj's so they are ready to wear!
  • We cozy up in our new pj's and lounge a bit of the day
  • We have our big Christmas meal (typically ham or smoked turkey) on Christmas Day afternoon

Those are some that I can think of this morning. :-) Makes me so excited for next week!

What are your traditions in your family? I'm excited to hear about what other families do!

Santa comes to our house on Christmas eve (so that he has more time on Christmas morning to get presents to all the other kids). We come home from the Chrimstmas eve church service and pour into our stockings from Santa.

Then we eat Crab Legs ... mmmmmmmm . . and shrimp . . . . mmmmmm.

Then we open presents by the tree taking turns. Every year my sister and I get a Christmas decoration for our current homes (my sister's is always a santa clause and mine is always a snowman). Typically my parents also give me some sort of game.

Then we try to do something fun. We either play in the snow (mom and dad too) or we play a game.

Merry Christmas!

We have now spent 15 years away from family for Christmas. It is a very hard time of year for us to travel from Arizona back to North Dakota and we no long own any of the right clothes. i.e. a winter jacket. We have a jar of Christmas questions we use every year. we start using them the first of December. The fun part now is we have them all memorized and usually can shout out the answer after 2 words of the question.

I did find out a couple of years ago about a Christmas tradition at our house that I knew nothing of. It seems my girls (21, 19 and 14) have been setting an alarm for 4 am to sneak down and peak at Santa gifts for years. Meanwhile mom and dad were snuggled in bed....

Some Christmas traditions include you....some don't I guess
